Conjunctival fibroblasts, like other fibroblasts, are responsible for fibrosis, matrix production, and tissue remodeling. They also actively act as an effector in ocular allergies. In chronic allergic conjunctivitis, conjunctival fibroblasts responded to histamine to increase proliferation and induce the production of proinflammatory cytokines; such as IL-1, IL-6, and IL-8, to perpetuate allergic inflammation.
