The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and a vast network of neurons. It functions as the command center for the body. The nervous system sends, receives, and also interprets signals from all over the body. It also coordinates responses to the internal and external environment. Neurons, endothelial cells, astrocytes, pericytes, smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts, Schwann cells, epithelial cells, meningeal cells, and microglia are critical components necessary for the normal function of the nervous cell system. Abnormal cell proliferation and regulation within the nervous system contributes to the development of disorders; such as cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, mental illness, and Huntington’s disease.
