This gene encodes a protein which is a member of the G-protein-coupled receptor family. This receptor binds to Interleukin 8 and chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1/MGSA), a protein with melanoma growth stimulating activity. Expression of CXCR2 occurs on neutrophils and oligodendrocytes playing important roles in immunity, cancer growth and CNS development; but its expression also occurs on human basophils, T-lymphocytes and endothelial cells.
