The liver is critical for many vital functions such as; energy metabolism, biotransformation of xenobiotics, synthesis of plasma proteins under physiological and pathophysiological conditions, and detoxification of substances. Hepatocytes are the cells of the main parenchymal tissue of the liver. They make up 70-85% of the liver’s mass. Human Hepatocytes (HH) have several functions such as productions of proteins required for protein synthesis, cholesterol, synthesis, proteins storage, bile production and secretion, and substances detoxification. HH in culture are an excellent in vitro model for studying liver function, metabolism, and liver disease; but also to stablish models for Hight Throughput and High Content Screening. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of the liver may help to elucidate new therapies for treatment of hepatic disease.
