Human Brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMEC) is the major component of the blood-brain barrier. One of their functions is to limit the passage of soluble and cellular substances from the blood into the brain. BMEC have unique features to distinguish themselves from those of peripheral endothelial cells, such as; 1) intercellular tight junctions that display high electrical resistance and also a slow paracellular flux; 2) the absence of fenestrae and a reduced level of pinocytic activity; and 3) asymmetrically-localized enzymes and carrier-mediated transport systems. Similar to peripheral endothelial cells, BMEC can express cell adhesion molecules on their surface that regulate the extravasation of leukocytes into the brain. BMEC are useful tools for studying the molecular and cellular properties of blood-brain barrier because of their unique functions. Immortalized Human Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells allow to stablish in vitro models for HIgh Throughput Screening and High Content Screening.

Immortalized Human Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells
Immortalized Human Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells (IM-HBMEC) provided by Innoprot have been developed by immortalizing primary human brain endothelial cells with SV40 Large T antigen.
Immortalized cells were controlled passaging side by side with the primary cells. Primary cells go into senescence after the 3rd passage while the SV40‐tranduced cells go beyond 30 passages.
Each vial of IM-HBMEC contains more than 1 million viable cells. Innoprot also offers optimized medium and reagents for the growth of IM-HBMEC which are quality tested together and guaranteed to give maximum performance as a global solution for in vitro IM-HBMEC culture.
