Immortalized Human Small Intestine Smooth Muscle Cells (IM-HSISMC) provided by Innoprot have been developed by immortalizing primary human small intestine smooth muscle cells with SV40 Large T antigen.

Immortalized cells were controlled passaging side by side with the primary cells. Primary cells go into senescence after the 5th passage while the SV40‐tranduced cells go beyond 30 passages.

Each vial of Immortalized Human Small Intestine Smooth Muscle Cells contains more than 1 million viable cells. Innoprot also offers optimized medium and reagents for the growth of IM-HSISMC which are quality tested together and guaranteed to give maximum performance as a global solution for in vitro IM-HSISMC culture.

Smooth muscle contraction is the fundamental event in gastrointestinal motion. Inflammation of the human intestine causes increased levels of smooth muscle-specific actin, which in turn promotes the thickening of the smooth muscle layers. The increased smooth muscle actin may affect force production and further demonstrates the plasticity of HSISMC in the inflamed intestine. Studies also show that human intestinal smooth muscle cells respond to IL-1beta and TNF-alpha stimulation by releasing IL-6. It may significantly contribute to the overall systemic inflammatory response. Human Small Intestine Smooth Muscle Cells (HSISMC) possess a different subtype of somatostatin receptor from gastric smooth muscle cells. HSISMC makes it more feasible to study the contractile and proliferative responses of human colonic smooth muscle. Immortalized Human Small Intestine Smooth Muscle Cells are also useful tools to stablish in vitro disease models for High Throughput and High Content Screening.
