The cannabinoid receptors are members of the guanine-nucleotide-binding protein (G-protein) coupled receptor family. CB1 receptors appear in the CNS and are responsible for mediating the effects of cannabinoid binding in the brain. Depolarized neurons release endocannabinoids, which bind to CB1 receptors on pre-synaptic glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons, resulting in a respective decrease in either glutamate or GABA release.
